Welcome!

Our church is open to anyone who is looking for a place to belong.

We do not have all the answers, but we are excited for the opportunities we have to search for them together! We hope you will be able to find what you’re looking for here, but if not, please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone, email, or via Facebook or Twitter.

fellowshipiconFAITH

At the United Methodist Church, we have core beliefs centered upon God, Jesus the Christ, and the Holy Spirit. We do not, however, require every member and friend of our church to agree on every detail.  We don’t all have to believe exactly the same thing, but we believe in God and each other! There is room enough in this house of God for everyone, and you are encouraged to think for yourself about the matters of faith and religion.  We do not claim to have all the answers, but we do claim to help one another as we seek those answers together.

outreachFELLOWSHIP

There are a number of different opportunities for fellowship within our family of faith.  Some are organized with certain groups in mind – like the United Methodist Women or United Methodist Youth Fellowship – and others are organized around a particular event – such as a potluck or mission opportunity.  We are a church of over 900 members – but we strive to have a feeling of connectedness and relationship among our members.

handsOUTREACH

The United Methodist Church has long had an emphasis on missions and outreach, and the Memorial UMC in McCook is no different. From the Helping Hand Thrift Store, to the Community Garden, to a variety of other mission projects that come up from time to time, we do not shy away from being involved in our community and around the world.  We do not live out our faith in an isolated way – we believe we are meant to put our faith into action and freely share the love of God with the world, as we have so freely received it.

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

II Corinthians 5:20

I’M NEW HERE

What do I need to know about Memorial UMC?

First of all, you should know that we are very glad you’ve found us!  Ours is a church with a long history in McCook.  Since 1884 the Methodists have been in ministry in this community.  We have occupied three different buildings in two different locations, but have been on the corner of Norris Avenue and E Street since 1926.  Ours is a beautiful building in which to worship, serve, and grow.  Our membership is varied.  With nearly 900 members, there are folks from all walks of life, different backgrounds, different experiences, and different views about a variety of things.  We offer different opportunities for growth, service, and worship for all age levels.  We don’t pretend to be the perfect church, but we believe that God is grooming us toward Christian Perfection – which is the perfect love of God and neighbor.

In the UMC, we observe two sacraments:  Holy Communion and Baptism.  Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month, and is available to anyone who desires to receive the elements of bread and grape juice.  We are in no position to deem anyone unworthy to receive them, or unwelcome at Christ’s table.  Christ himself would never turn anyone away, and neither will we.  Baptism is celebrated at such times as it is requested.  In our tradition we will baptize babies, children, youth, or adults.  We recognize baptism performed at other churches and in other traditions…it isn’t for us to say that God wasn’t there, and that it didn’t count.  We will not rebaptize anyone – because again, what God has done once doesn’t need to be re-done.  We do celebrate, from time to time, a reaffirmation of our baptism vows.

WORSHIP

We have two services of worship each Sunday.  Our contemporary service is at 8:15 and is led by either our youth praise band “Significant Light” or by “Those Guys.”  The 10:30 service is traditional in format utilizing our 1,700+ pipe organ, with the Chancel Choir providing special music through the school year. Both services celebrate Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month.Organ Pipes and Cross
Children are very important to us at Memorial UMC, and we love to have them worship with the rest of the congregation.  We do understand that sometimes it might be helpful to their caregivers to have them looked after in the nursery during worship. Our nursery is staffed at both services of worship if you choose to utilize it.

FEEDING HIS FLOCK

Every Thursday night, our church hosts a free meal for anyone who wants to attend. Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. Each week a group of dedicated volunteers prepares the meal. Sometimes outside groups come and prepare the meal.  Dinner is open to anyone who wants to attend, with no questions asked, no expectations made.
